Mold and Toxicity During Hurricane Season
Amy Rawls, MS, RD, LD, CGN, FMNS
After natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, excess moisture and standing water contribute to the growth of mold in homes and other buildings. With the height of hurricane season upon us it is important to shed light on the havoc hurricanes can cause not only to our belongings but also to our health. The impact of hurricanes on health is not captured in the mortality and morbidity numbers in the days after the rain. This is typified by the inglorious problem of mold. Submerging a city means introducing a new ecosystem of fungal growth that will change the health of the population in ways we are only beginning to understand.
When Hurricane Harvey flooded over 300,000 structures in southeastern Texas, some Texans had mold in their homes as a result. If you have patients suffering from strange, seemingly unconnected symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, tremors, or muscle twitches, should you suspect mold toxicity as the root of their illness? In this webinar learn what you can do to rebound the body if your patient has been exposed to mold.
