Back to School: The Importance of Digestion and Sleep
Paula Kruppstadt, MD
When the daylight hours lengthen and school lets out for the summer, it’s easy to take a relaxed attitude toward kids’ sleep habits. But despite the fact that few children want to go to bed before it’s dark outside, it’s not a good idea to ditch the regular bedtime schedule. Late bedtimes result in an altered circadian rhythm and a tired (and perhaps cranky) child. There are several potential health consequences of skimping on sleep during the summer, such as changes in mood, difficulty paying attention, overeating, and maintaining weight. Adequate, restful sleep ensures that their digestive organs have time for rest and repair.
Since 80% of the body’s immune system dwells in the digestive tract, maintaining digestive health is crucial to the body’s overall well-being. In turn, a healthy digestive system must be maintained in order for our body’s hormones and circadian rhythm to maintain balance and deliver quality sleep. In this webinar you will hear what board certified pediatrician Paula Kruppstadt has to say about the impact that healthy nutrition and digestion have on sleep.
